Yes, I said kooky. I saw this idea in
the newspaper at Hallowe'en - probably
under the moniker "Scary Silverware."
It's a project that you can adapt according
to the season - Christmas Cutlery, Valentine's
V-......you get the idea. (Also, I can't
think of a synonym for cutlery that
starts with "v.") The best way I can
describe this project is plastic surgery
for your silverware. If you've accumulated
mismatched pieces over the years this
is a fun way to make them into a set.
If you don't have any extra forks, knives
or spoons to sacrifice to the crafting
gods, you can pick some up at your local
dollar store.
What you'll need:
-
Assorted cutlery
- Plastic placemat for work surface
- Polymer clay or Fimo
- Artist's knife or box-cutter
- Water-based varnish
- Clay-crafting tools (optional)
Instructions:
Clean
the cutlery, then cover the handle of
each piece with clay. Roll a small piece
of clay into a thin sheet, then cut
it into strips that cover the handle.
Trim the edges.
Bake in the oven according to directions
on the package. Take the cutlery out
of the oven. When it has cooled, cover
the handles in another layer of clay,
but don't bake them. Now, add your embellishments.
Take small pieces of clay and make it
into balls, strips, or other small shapes.
Press shapes onto the handle of each
utensil. Bake again according to package
directions. Once utensils have cooled
again, apply the water-based varnish.
Do not wash in the dishwasher.
